Product Introduction: Alloy Elbow
An alloy elbow is a category of pipe fittings used at pipe bends for directional changes. It is an essential component in piping systems. Its function is to connect two pipes of the same nominal diameter, allowing the pipeline to turn at a specific angle.
By Angle:
| Angle Type | Common Angles |
|---|---|
| Standard Angles | 45°, 90°, 180° |
| Special Angles | 60° (custom as required) |
By Bend Radius:
| Type | Radius Formula | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Long Radius Elbow | R = 1.5D | Bend radius = 1.5 × pipe OD |
| Short Radius Elbow | R = 1.0D | Bend radius = pipe OD |
(Note: D = pipe diameter, R = bend radius)
Alloy elbows are made from various materials, each suited to different operating conditions:
| Material | Characteristics | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Manganese Steel Alloy | Excellent impact, extrusion, and abrasion resistance | Concrete pipelines, slurry lines, high-impact fluid pipes |
| Nickel Steel Alloy | Resists high-concentration oxidizing acids (nitric, sulfuric) | Room-temperature oxidizing acid pipelines (Note: prone to corrosion in reducing acids like hydrochloric or dilute sulfuric) |
| Martensitic Alloy | High strength up to 650°C; oxidation and steam-corrosion resistant | High-temperature steam lines, water-gas pipes (poor weldability) |
| Bronze Alloy | Moderate corrosion resistance | General water pipes (gradually replaced by stainless steel) |
| Stainless Steel | Excellent corrosion resistance | Water supply lines, special-service pipelines |
| Carbon Steel | Good all-around performance, lower cost | General industrial pipelines |
Common Grade Examples:
20#, 16Mn, 12Cr1MoV, 15CrMo, 10CrMo910, 1Cr5MO, WB36, A335P91, etc.
| Process | Features | Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Hot Push Forming | Uses push machine, mandrel, and heating device to expand and bend the billet while in motion | Smooth finish, uniform wall thickness, continuous production — ideal for carbon/alloy steel elbows in large batches |
| Stamping (Press Forming) | Uses a press and die (cold or hot stamping) | Small-batch, thick-wall elbows; suitable for single-piece and low-cost production |
| Forging / Casting | Shaped by forging or casting | Selected per requirements; pure forging now common |
Process Comparison:
Stamped elbows have approximately 10% wall thinning at the outer arc and lower surface quality compared to hot-pushed elbows, but they are suitable for single-piece and low-cost manufacturing.
Alloy elbows are classified by pressure rating, consistent with U.S. pipe standards. Common ratings include:
Sch10, Sch20, Sch30, Sch40, STD, Sch60, Sch80, XS, Sch100, Sch120, Sch140, Sch160, XXS
Sch5s, Sch10s, Sch40s, Sch80s (thin-wall series)
STD and XS are the most commonly used ratings.
